12/2/20242 min read

On the 1st of December 2024, Benue State became a beacon of solidarity and action as WRAHI Nigeria, alongside numerous community-based organizations (CBOs) and stakeholders, joined the global effort to mark World AIDS Day. The theme for this year, "Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress," resonated through the streets and hearts of the people, emphasizing the importance of unity in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The Day's Activities:
The day kicked off with an energetic and informative rally through the heart of Benue State. Participants, ranging from healthcare workers to students, local leaders to members of the public, marched together, holding banners and chanting messages of awareness, hope, and solidarity. The rally was not just a parade but a moving testament to the community's commitment to eradicating stigma, promoting prevention, and supporting those living with HIV.
On-Premises Testing:
Following the rally, the focus shifted to practical action with on-premises HIV testing. The setup was efficient, ensuring privacy, dignity, and quick results for those who came forward. This initiative was particularly commendable, as it broke down barriers to testing, which often include fear of stigma or the logistical challenge of accessing health services.
The turnout for testing was notably high, a clear sign of the impact of the advocacy and educational efforts led by WRAHI Nigeria and its partners. This not only provided individuals with critical information about their health status but also served as an educational moment for the community about the importance of knowing one's HIV status.
Impact and Reflection:
The event was more than just a day of activities; it was a pivotal moment for reflection on the journey of HIV in Nigeria. With an estimated 1.9 million people living with HIV in the country, according to the 2019 Nigeria National HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey, events like these are crucial. They not only increase awareness but also directly contribute to the national goal of achieving the 90-90-90 targets, where 90% of people living with HIV know their status, 90% of those diagnosed are on antiretroviral treatment, and 90% of those treated have suppressed viral loads.
Looking Forward:
The success of World AIDS Day in Benue State serves as a model for future events. It highlighted the importance of community involvement, the power of collective action, and the necessity of accessible health services. The day's commendable turnout is a testament to the growing awareness and acceptance, crucial for moving towards a future where HIV/AIDS no longer poses a significant public health threat.
Acknowledgements:
Special thanks go to WRAHI Nigeria for their leadership in organizing this event, the CBOs for their grassroots efforts, and all stakeholders for their support. Additionally, the participation of the public was the heart of the event, showing that when a community unites for a cause, the impact can be profound and lasting.
Conclusion:
As we reflect on World AIDS Day 2024 in Benue State, let's carry forward the spirit of this day into our daily actions. Let’s continue to educate, advocate, and support each other in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Together, we can make a difference, one step, one test, one rally at a time.
